What do you do when you don’t feel worthy of the life you desire?
This feeling prevents us from moving toward our dreams. It’s at the core of imposter syndrome, the crippling sense that maybe we aren’t good enough.
Robert Ellis changed the way I approach this internal problem. In his book Coaching From Essence, he writes,
“If you don’t feel you deserve to be successful, there’s a simple cure. Deserve means serve. The word deserve literally means to serve well. If you don’t feel you deserve your success, serve more. Find a way to create more value.”
Notice he doesn’t encourage us to find a way to feel more worthy. He challenges us to increase our level of service. It echoes the wisdom of Dr. King, who said,
“Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve.”
Deserving isn’t about earning. It’s about serving.
