The other night, I was sitting in my truck, mindlessly scrolling my phone while waiting for my daughters to finish dance class.
Suddenly, I got the feeling I was being watched. I looked to my left, and a deer was less than ten feet away, staring at me. I heard myself say,
“Oh my.”
It wasn’t fear. It wasn’t even really surprise. It was awe.
I was instantly filled with wonder, as if some magical creature had snuck up to remind me that there’s a beautiful world beyond the boundaries of the glowing rectangle in my hand.
Stunned, I locked eyes with the deer until it slowly turned and walked back into the tree line. I just sat there for a while, watching the trees for movement, hoping to catch another glimpse of my new friend.
I’m not sure why I’m sharing this, except maybe to pass along the reminder that there’s a wonderful world right outside our window. It won’t beg for our attention. But it moves gracefully in our direction, inviting us to make contact—even if only for a moment.
Perhaps this is an invitation to set your phone down and look up. Who knows what you might encounter?
