I saw this "motivational" post the other day:
It would be great if it were true.
But the single mom who's working two jobs right now, doing everything she can to put food on the table, get the kids the education they need, and still somehow find a way to carve out quality time with them, does not have the same 24 hours as the CEO who's trying to cram a shareholder meeting in between two golf outings today.
They're not sharing the same reality.
I understand the logic behind messages like these. Those who succeed in life indeed find a way to prioritize. They know what to say yes to, and, more importantly, what to say no to. But sometimes we have to say yes to a lot more than we want in the moment.
So here's a better question:
Am I doing the best I can with the time I actually have to create the life I want?
If the answer to that question is no, in the immortal words of Dr. Maya Angelou, when you know better, do better.
If the answer to that is yes and you still don't quite have the life you want, don't give up. Keep going. It’s only a matter of time.
