Maybe That's Why We Need Traffic
🤔 How setbacks remind us to dance while the music is playing

Yesterday, I got stuck in standstill traffic.
At one point, I glanced at my rearview mirror and saw a man in an SUV behind me peering into his back seat. He was slowly bobbing his head.
He turned to the dashboard and must have adjusted the volume on his stereo because he smiled and started dancing. That’s when I noticed a set of braids pop out from behind the driver’s seat. A little girl (his daughter, I’m assuming) started laughing and dancing along.
I just sat there smiling, forgetting I was in traffic. Forgetting I had somewhere to be. For a few moments, I was the uninvited guest at a traffic jam dance party, and it made my day.
Sometimes, we get so caught up in it. The schedules. The routines. The voluntary and involuntary busyness of life. We forget how amazing the world can be. We overlook the beauty around and within us. In a sea of passing cars, we lose sight of our connected humanity, the community we so desperately long for.
Maybe that’s why we need traffic. Maybe the setbacks and hiccups are really just speed bumps reminding us to slow down, take it all in, and dance while the music is playing.
