You’ve heard the expression, “No risk, no reward.” We usually think of it as a nudge to take a chance.
Start that business.
Ask them on a date.
Invest in that stock.
Leave everyone you know and build a new life across the country (or world).
Obviously, these all apply. But have you ever considered that everything is a risk? Every job, relationship, partnership. Every time you get into a mode of transportation—trains, planes, or Ubers. Honestly, whenever you leave your house, you are taking a risk.
The question is, would I rather take the risks that may help me thrive or settle for the risks that may help me survive?
I love how Jim Carrey frames this idea.
Carrey describes his father as the funniest man he’s ever known. But instead of pursuing an entertainment career, his father chose the “safe” career path of an accountant to minimize risk and provide stability for his family—until he was unexpectedly fired from his job and forced to scramble to make ends meet anyway.
Reflecting on this experience, Jim Carrey shared this:
“I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which is that you can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love."
I’m not suggesting you quit your job, invest in Bitcoin, and move across the country. I’m inviting you to take a closer look at risk and opt for a chance at thriving rather than the hope of merely surviving.
