Reminder:
Being a nice person doesn’t make someone a good person. In fact, sometimes being good means we can’t be nice.
A smiling face is great until it’s used as a shield to guard from the discomfort of confrontation.
Psychologist Harriet Lerner warned us about the “tyranny of niceness,” which many of us (and women in particular) have been conditioned to accept as a way to keep from rocking the boat. This isn’t good for anyone.
Sometimes, the boat needs to be rocked. Hell, sometimes, it needs to be sunk.
Niceness may preserve the peace (at least at the surface level). But goodness requires occasional disruption for the sake of true and lasting peace.
Be good. Be kind. Nice? It depends.
